We’re all a little weird. And life is a little weird. And when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall into mutually satisfying weirdness—and call it love—true love. – Dr. Seuss.
That was the quote Anita used to describe their engagement late last year, and I cannot agree more with this fun little sentiment. One of my first impressions of my own husband was that he was weird. Deep down, though, I know that I’m weird too, just in a different way. Well, we got together in the end, didn’t we? We’re hacking out our weirdness together every single day. That’s what makes us uniquely us, I guess. So when I saw this quote on Anita’s Facebook announcing their proposal and engagement, it made me chuckle.
Mark had proposed to Anita underneath a beautiful wooden arbor that he had constructed himself. He decorated it with fairy lights and draped with a flowy fabric, against a backdrop of mountains and water. How romantic is that?? Looking at my calendar now, they will be tying the knot in less than half a year! So exciting!!
We had planned for getting a snowy and wintry engagement session for weeks now. But, since there had been no snow in greater Vancouver all winter, we originally wanted to go to Grouse Mountain, just so that we can get some snowy pictures. Anita and Mark also wanted photos with an important member in their family as well: their cute little furbaby named Honey! I was more than excited; I love dogs! Since no dogs were allowed on Grouse, we were going to get some photos at a nearby park with Honey before travelling up to Grouse. As we got closer to the date of the photo shoot, however, it finally started snowing here in Vancouver! We decided it wasn’t necessary to go all the way to Grouse, and to keep it local instead. As usual, I kept an eye on the weather forecast:
Swipe.
Rainy forecast.
Several days later, swipe.
Still more rain than we would like.
We decided to reschedule.
After rescheduling and some days later, swipe.
Rainy again.
Day before the rescheduled shoot, swipe.
Snowy with intermittent rain.
It seemed like there wasn’t any way around this weather this late winter season. After some discussion, we agreed to go ahead with the photo shoot. Our backup plan for a downpour of rain or heavy snow was to stay inside a cafe or two that have nice interior design. However, after spending a little time inside La Foret in Vancouver—as lovely as it was being warm and cozy indoor—we couldn’t help but go outside and embrace the wintry snowy weather. And were we glad we did!
Even though it was wet and cold, Anita and Mark were still really enthusiastic about their photo shoot. They were more than willing to go anywhere I asked them for the best shots in this weather, with or without the umbrella. They didn’t mind getting a little wet, and even had a change of clothes! Anita got in a more formal, elegant dress, and Mark changed into a handsome suit complete with bow tie! Not to mention, they put Honey in a little doggy sweater and neck bow. So cute!! This little Chihuahua did so well in the snow! The rain and snow eventually slowed down quite a bit later that day, and I was so glad we got to get more photos without getting drenched!

Thank you for trusting me with outfit, timeline, and location suggestions. I’m so glad that our snowy winter engagement in Vancouver worked out! It was such an honor for me and I loved photographing you both—three ;). I enjoyed hanging out with you two at the cafe and getting to know you and your story more! Thank you for the snack, for lunch, and for spending precious time with me that day. You guys were awesome and I hope you enjoy these photos! Can’t wait for the wedding at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club!!
